Terms of service
The short version. You divert your missed calls to us, our automated assistant takes a message, and we send it to you on WhatsApp (or email). You pay a flat monthly price; on the Business plan, extra messages beyond the allowance cost a little more. You can cancel any time. If your mobile network can't divert to us, you get a full refund. We're careful, but an automated assistant can mishear, so don't rely on it for anything where a missed detail would be serious.
1. Who we are and how to reach us
AfterTheTone is a trading name of PJM IT Solutions Ltd, Unit 36, Silk Mill Industrial Estate, Brook Street, Tring HP23 5EF ("we", "us"). Support: support@afterthetone.uk.
These terms, together with our privacy policy, are the contract between you and us. By creating an account you agree to them. If you are signing up for a business, you confirm you are entitled to bind it.
2. Who can use the service
- You must be 18 or over and have a UK mobile number.
- The Personal plan is for individuals taking voicemail for themselves. The Business plan is for sole traders and small businesses taking messages from customers.
- One person, mobile number or email address may hold one account.
3. What the service does
When a call you don't answer is diverted to us, an automated voice assistant answers, tells the caller it is automated and that the call is recorded, and takes a message. We then send you a summary on WhatsApp (or by email if WhatsApp isn't available or you prefer email) with a link to the recording and transcript in your account.
- Personal: the assistant greets callers with your name and records a free-form message.
- Business: the assistant greets callers with your business name, asks for their name, the reason for calling and a good time to call back, then takes a free-form message.
Calls that are silent, hang up within seconds, or that the assistant judges to be sales, scam or robocalls are not passed on to you and never count as messages.
4. Your number and diverting calls
- You keep your own mobile number. You set a divert on it (we show you the code) so unanswered calls come to a number we provide. Your mobile network may charge you for diverted calls under your tariff; that is between you and your network.
- Personal accounts, and Business accounts without the own-number add-on, divert to a shared number. We work out whose call it is from the number the call was diverted from. Some UK networks don't pass that information on. See section 7.
- Business accounts can add their own UK number (the add-on in section 5). You can give that number out; calls to it ring your mobile first and then fall to the assistant, or go straight to the assistant if you prefer. The number is ours and is licensed to you while the add-on is active; it cannot be ported away and is released when you remove the add-on or close your account.
- Numbers we provide cannot call the emergency services and must not be given out as an emergency contact.
5. Prices
All prices include VAT. We bill by card through Stripe.
| Plan | Price | Included | Beyond that |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | £2.50 a month | 15 messages a month, each up to 2 minutes | No extra charge; from the next message the mailbox is full until the 1st of the following month |
| Business | £10 a month | 20 messages a month | 30p per extra message, billed in arrears |
| Own UK number (Business add-on) | £3 a month | Added or removed at any time; charged pro rata by Stripe | |
- A "message" is a call where the caller left something for you. Spam, silent and very short calls are never counted or charged.
- The monthly price is taken in advance at the start of each billing month. Business overage is added to the following month's bill.
- You can set a spending cap in your account. When extra messages would take you past it, the assistant stops taking messages for the rest of the month and tells callers so.
- We may change prices with at least 30 days' notice by WhatsApp or email. If you don't want to pay the new price, cancel before it starts.
6. Payment problems
If a payment fails, Stripe retries it and we email you. While the subscription is unpaid or cancelled, the assistant stops taking messages and tells callers you aren't taking messages at the moment. Service resumes as soon as the payment goes through.
7. Networks we can't support, and the refund
For accounts on a shared number we rely on your mobile network passing us the number a call was diverted from. Your first step after paying is a test call. If the test call never reaches us because your network doesn't pass that information, you can click Refund and cancel in your account: we refund everything you have paid and cancel the subscription. We publish what we know about each network on the sign-up page. A Business account can instead add its own number, which doesn't depend on the divert information.
8. Cancelling
- You can cancel at any time from your account's billing page. Service continues to the end of the month you have paid for, then stops. We don't refund part-months except as set out here.
- If you are a consumer (the Personal plan, or a Business account used otherwise than for trade), you have a legal right to cancel within 14 days of signing up. By signing up you ask us to start the service straight away. If you cancel within those 14 days, we refund everything you have paid in full. Tell us at support@afterthetone.uk or use the cancel button.
- You can also delete your account entirely from Settings. That cancels the subscription, releases any own number, and deletes your messages, recordings and transcripts (see the privacy policy for what Stripe keeps).
- We can end your account with 30 days' notice, or immediately if you break section 9 or don't pay. If we end it for our own reasons, we refund the unused part of the month.
9. Using the service properly
You must not:
- use the service for anything unlawful, or to harass, deceive or defraud anyone;
- use it to take calls on behalf of a business other than the one on the account, or resell it;
- point premium-rate, bulk or automated traffic at a number we provide, or use the assistant to generate traffic;
- try to get into anyone else's account or interfere with the service.
You are responsible for how you use the messages you receive. If you run a business, your own obligations to your customers (including under data protection law) apply to what callers tell you; our privacy policy explains that you become a controller for that information once we deliver it.
10. What we don't promise
- The assistant is automated. It can mishear a name, a number or a time, miss a message, or treat a genuine call as spam. Always check the recording for anything that matters, and don't rely on the service for calls where a missed or wrong detail could cause serious harm: medical, legal, safety or emergency matters.
- The service depends on your mobile network, on telephone carriers and on third-party providers. We aim to be available all the time but don't guarantee it, and we may take the service down briefly for maintenance.
- WhatsApp delivery depends on Meta. If a WhatsApp message fails, we switch to email for you.
- We provide the service as described in these terms and nothing more. Any other warranties implied by law are excluded as far as the law allows. If you are a consumer, nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights, including the right to a service performed with reasonable care and skill.
11. Liability
- We don't exclude or limit our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't let us limit.
- Subject to that, we are not liable for loss of profit, business, contracts, opportunities or goodwill, or for any indirect or consequential loss, including a job you didn't get because a message was missed or wrong.
- Subject to that, our total liability to you for everything arising out of the service in any 12-month period is limited to the amount you paid us in that period.
12. Your data
How we handle personal data is set out in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms. You can download any recording from your account while it is retained; recordings are deleted after 90 days unless you change the setting.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. For anything other than a correction or a change the law requires, we give you at least 30 days' notice by WhatsApp or email. If you keep using the service after the change takes effect, the new terms apply; if you don't agree, cancel before then. The version number at the top identifies the current terms; your account records which version you accepted.
14. General
- These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may also bring proceedings there.
- If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- We may transfer this contract to someone who takes over the service; we will tell you if we do, and your rights are unaffected.
